One of the most common questions we get at Wahab Catering Services is: "How many Daigs do I need to order for 200 people?"
If you don't understand how Daigs are measured, you risk either ordering too much food (which wastes money) or worse, running out of food while guests are still eating. In this guide, we break down standard Daig sizes in Peshawar.
Understanding Daig Weight (Rice vs. Meat)
When caterers talk about the "weight" of a Daig, they are usually referring to the amount of raw rice and meat going into the pot, not the final cooked weight.
For example, a "12kg Biryani Daig" usually contains:
- 12kg of premium Basmati Rice
- 12kg of Chicken/Meat
- Plus oil, water, and spices.
This means the total weight of the cooked food is much heavier!
The Daig Serving Size Cheat Sheet
1. The Standard 12kg Daig (Rice Dishes)
This is the most common size ordered for weddings and large gatherings. A standard 12kg Daig of Biryani or Pulao will generously serve 35 to 40 people.
2. The 10kg Daig (Sweet Dishes)
For sweet dishes like Zarda or Mutanjan, a 10kg Daig is standard. Because sweets are eaten in smaller portions at the end of a meal, a 10kg sweet Daig can easily serve 50 to 60 people.
3. Curry Daigs (Korma / Karahi)
A full Daig of Mutton or Chicken Korma (usually measured by the meat weight, e.g., 10kg or 12kg of meat) will serve around 35 to 40 people, assuming it is served with fresh Naan.
How to Calculate Your Order
Let's say you are hosting a wedding reception for 200 guests. You want to serve Chicken Biryani, Mutton Korma, and Zarda. Here is how you calculate it:
- Biryani: 200 guests / 40 portions per Daig = 5 Daigs.
- Korma: 200 guests / 40 portions per Daig = 5 Daigs.
- Zarda: 200 guests / 60 portions per Daig = 3.5 Daigs (Round up to 4 for safety).
